一种体型较大的猛蚁,工蚁的体长大约10毫米,体色变化较大黄褐色或黑褐色,上颚、触角、足颜色较淡。

分布(Distribution)
广泛分布于亚洲,分布地带从印度到马六甲海峡到中国大陆、台湾到日本。在中国,它的势力范围达到北京以北,北纬40度以北。具体包括中国北京、上海(佘山)、陕西(终南山)、浙江(莫干山、天目山、百山祖、丽水)、湖南(岳麓山)、湖北(利川、施恩)、四川(成都、盆地西缘山地域、川西南高原域、川东盆地域)、福建、海南(昌江、尖峰岭、万宁、五指山)、云南(石林、西双版纳、昆明)、香港(浅水湾)、吉林、广西(天峨、南丹、龙虎山、青龙山、弄岗、木论、九万山、花坪、猫儿山、青狮潭、大瑶山、大屏山、大明山、底定、岑王老山、大王岭、十万大山)、广东(信宜、广州、百涌、鼎湖山、车八岭)、台湾(仙甲、台东、恒春、嘉义、南投)、甘肃(景泰、麦积)、河南(公鸡山、济源)、贵州(雷山);巴布亚新几内亚,菲律宾,印度,斯里兰卡,缅甸,泰国,日本,越南。

该种蚂蚁的巢在石头下或腐烂的木头下。在逃跑时,这种蚂蚁可以通过上颚的有力张开、闭合触地,反弹跳出1厘米左右。也有人认为这种反弹是猛蚁在慌乱中上颚偶然碰到硬的东西造成的。笔者和Alex Wild认为此种此种弹跳方式属于偶然现象。
